Antigonish County native wins $1 million teaching prize for work in northern Quebec

A Nova Scotia-born teacher has won a one-million-dollar award for excellence in her field.

Maggie MacDonnell, who grew up in Afton, Antigonish County, received the highly-coveted Global Teacher Prize for her work at a remote schoolhouse in Quebec.

MacDonnell beat out thousands of applicants from around the world.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a former teacher himself, offered his congratulations in a video message that was broadcast at a ceremony in the United Arab Emirates.
