Canso Spaceport Facility project registered for environmental assessment
Maritime Launch Services Limited has registered the Canso Spaceport Facility project for environmental assessment.
The project would see the construction of a private commercial space launch site to provide rocket launch services to clients.
The proposed site is two to three kilometres south of Canso, encompassing around 20 hectares located behind the existing Sable Wind Farm.
The facility would be comprised of three main components: the Launch Control Center, the Horizontal Integration Facility and the Vertical Launch Area.
A medium class orbital launch vehicle designed by Yuzhnoye SDO in the Ukraine, will transport satellites into orbit.
The application states eight launches are expected per year, including associated pre-flight activities such as mission rehearsals.
Construction is anticipated to begin this winter, with the first launch planned for 2021.
Environment Minister Iain Rankin has until August 23rd to decide if conditional environmental assessment approval can be granted.
