Casey: Millbrook First Nation makes proposal for RCMP communications centre

The fight to keep the RCMP's communications centre in Colchester County now includes a proposal by Millbrook First Nation.

A release from the office of Cumberland-Colchester MP Bill Casey says Millbrook made an offer to the RCMP's H Division in Halifax to retrofit an existing building for a modern dispatch centre.

Casey has been raising this issue with the RCMP and his own Liberal government after rumours early this year that the Operations Communications Centre in Truro would be moved from Truro to Halifax, which could affect over 50 jobs.

He says the current facility in downtown Truro is no longer suitable for the RCMP's purposes, but most of the staff and their families do not want to relocate.

Casey spent months trying to gain access to an internal RCMP report from 2006 which cited a public safety requirement that a communications centre be located away from Halifax and away from the other primary communications centre located in Dartmouth.

He says he's met with Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, to encourage serious consideration of Millbrook's proposal, and has spoken with Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott.
