CCRSB passes $230.8 million budget

The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) has approved a budget of nearly $230.8 million for 2017-18, an increase of around $3.3 million from last year.

To balance the budget, the board dealt with $5.1 million in net cost pressures, such as wage increases and the prices of fuel and electricity.

CCRSB received just under $3 million from the province in specific funding, and a one-time only major maintenance fund of $535,000 was cut.

The declining enrolment formula, mandated to the board, meant five fewer full-time equivalent (FTE) Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU) positions which saved just over $256,000.

That left $1.36 million in reductions to make, which was achieved through various cuts affecting all of the board's departments.

Overall, there was relatively no change to the FTE NSTU positions, but reallocation and reorganization, including 16 more Educational Assistants and eight more FTE resource/learning centre positions.

The budget was passed during a board meeting Wednesday night at Dr. W.A. MacLeod Consolidated School in Stellarton.
