CCRSB to decide fate of Maple Ridge Elementary on April 26th

The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board is expected to decide the fate of the Maple Ridge Elementary School on April 26th.

The board held a special meeting Monday night as part of the ongoing East Hants school review, and received a presentation from the School Options Committee (SOC) as well as a technical report from staff.

The staff report contained two options, one to close Maple Ridge Elementary and move students to Shubenacadie District Elementary, and the other to close Shubenacadie District and consolidate students in Maple Ridge and Winding River Consolidated.

Maple Ridge Elementary is a P-3 school, which is what triggered the school review, with a lease that expires in 2019 and the province needs a recommendation from the board on what to do with it by the end of July.

The SOC submitted a recommendation last month that CCRSB purchase Maple Ridge Elementary, continue to operate Shubenacadie District Elementary, and review the catchment areas for a possible redistribution of students from Enfield Elementary to Winding River Consolidated, inclusive.

They also argued that proposed development in the area as a result of the recently announced Highway 102 interchange in Lantz will increase the student population.

The board's April 26th meeting will be held at Truro Elementary at 7 p.m.
