CCRSB votes to keep Shubenacadie Elementary open

Members of the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board are recommending that Shubenacadie District Elementary remain open and that the province buy Maple Ridge Elementary in Lantz from its private owner.

The decision came at the end of the East Hants school review process during a meeting Wednesday night at Truro Elementary.

In a release, CCRSB Board Chair Trudy Thompson thanked members of the East Hants School Options Committee, for their dedication and hard work over the last five months.

During a meeting earlier this month, board staff had recommended that Shubenacadie Elementary close, sending students to Maple Ridge Elementary and Winding River Consolidated in Stewiacke.

The school review was started as Maple Ridge Elementary is a P3 school, built in 1999.

The province needed a recommendation from the school board so they can notify owner Nova Learning by the end of July whether they'll buy, extend the lease, or turn the school back over to them.

As such, the province has final say on what happens with these schools.
