Colchester Food Bank open house set for March 21

The Colchester Food Bank is holding an open house later this month to show the community its new permanent home.

The open house is scheduled for March 21, from 2 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm.

It will include tours of the new building at 580 Prince Street and a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The 6,000 square foot building includes 3,000 square feet of food storage space, as well as a client waiting room and offices.

For years, the food bank was located on Lorne Street in Truro, but had to move in December 2015 when the building was considered to be unsafe and too costly to repair.

The Town of Truro then offered the food bank the former Basin Basics building at the corner of Esplanade and Forrester on a short-term basis until a permanent home could be found.

In 2018, the Colchester Food Bank board announced local developer Joe Pinto would build a new facility on a vacant lot he owned on Prince Street, selling it to the food bank for $600,000 plus HST once complete.

The keys to the new building were turned over to the food bank on January 11, 2019.
