Committee recommends Hants County P-3 school be bought, remain open
A school options committee is recommending the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) purchase Maple Ridge Elementary, a P-3 school in Hants County, keeping it and Shubenacadie District Elementary open.
At the final public meeting of the school review process Thursday night, committee chairwoman Kerri-Ann Robson said the recommendation was narrowed down from eight to three by the second meeting.
She says there should be a review of catchment areas that would consider a redistribution of children from Enfield Elementary to Winding River Consolidated inclusive.
The committee also suggests a review of the location of French Immersion Program to advance optimization across these catchment areas.
Robson says the CCRSB told the committee the status quo couldn't remain, with suggested options being to close one school or the other, but leaving the door open to any option that was "a move towards optimization".
She says by recommending a catchment review, it's not the status quo, and would help optimize the use of both schools.
The final report and recommendation from the committee has to be submitted to the school board by March 13th, with a formal presentation to board members on April 26th.
