Data suggests one-fifth of materials delivered to Halifax recycling plant ended up in a landfill

Data suggests that almost one-fifth of materials collected and delivered to a Halifax recycling plant in the prior fiscal year ended up in a landfill.

That is the highest rate in the past 10 years.

The data was obtained by Global News through an access to information application.

The municipality says some small recyclable materials end up in the residue pile because they aren't detected by machines or human sorters, or aren't properly cleaned.
