Decision in East Hants school review expected Wednesday night

The East Hants school review process continues Wednesday night as members of the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) are holding a special meeting in Truro.

A staff report recommends closing Shubenacadie District Elementary and keeping Maple Ridge Elementary in Lantz open.

The School Options Committee submitted a recommendation last month that CCRSB purchase Maple Ridge Elementary, a P-3 facility, continue to operate Shubenacadie District Elementary, and review the catchment areas for a possible redistribution of students from Enfield Elementary to Winding River Consolidated, inclusive.

The newly announced Highway 102 interchange in Lantz could provide a lifeline for Shubenacadie District, due to the expected development to follow.

Maple Ridge was built in 1999 by Nova Learning, and the province needs an answer from the school board so it can ultimately decide whether or not to buy the school, extend the lease, or give the building back.

Wednesday's meeting is at 7 p.m. at Truro Elementary School.
