Design contract awarded for new Pugwash hospital

The provincial government has awarded the contract to design a new healthcare facility in Pugwash to replace the aging North Cumberland Memorial Hospital.

Architecture49 is expected to finish preliminary designs by this spring, and the province estimates that construction will begin in the spring of 2019.

Government says the new facility will offer primary health services, collaborative emergency care, laboratory and diagnostic imaging, inpatient care, and rehabilitation services.

There's no word on what this new facility will mean for physician coverage in the emergency department, which has been plagued by closures.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority announced the latest round of temporary closures Thursday: from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. today through Tuesday, and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
