Dozens of workers laid off at Cape Breton's Donkin Mine
Dozens of workers have been laid off at Cape Breton's Donkin Mine.
CTV News reports that 49 employees, roughly a third of the workforce, were given notice at a meeting this morning.
Kameron Coal Management Ltd. confirmed in a news release to CTV News that an "organizational restructure" has resulted in a reduction of the workforce.
Shannon Campbell, vice-president of the Donkin Mine, says the layoffs are necessary to ensure the company becomes an economically viable operation.
The Donkin Mine began operating in March, and the company says it's expected to remain operational for 30 years.
