The federal government says it wants to expand protections for sensitive marine areas.

Fisheries Minister Dominic LeBlanc is proposing changes to the Oceans Act.

They would allow temporary protection of marine areas or coastlines for up to five years while the government works to establish permanent protections.

LeBlanc also wants to amend the Canada Petroleum Resources Act to prevent oil and gas activities in areas with interim protection.
