Fishermen rescued by ferry south of Port Aux Basques

A Marine Atlantic ferry has arrived in North Sydney with three fishermen rescued by its crew after their boat caught fire.

A spokesperson for Marine Atlantic says the MV Leif Ericson changed course and responded to the vessel south of Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, last night after a distress call came in.

The captain and two crew members of the fishing vessel based out of Cape Breton's We'koqma'q First Nation were in the water and their boat was on fire when the ferry arrived.

One man was taken to hospital in Newfoundland but was released in time to return to Cape Breton aboard the ferry.
