Former Mountie ordered to stand trial in cocaine theft case

A former RCMP officer charged with stealing and trafficking cocaine from an exhibit locker in Halifax is due in court next month to set dates for trial.

Local Xpress reports a preliminary inquiry wrapped up last week for Craig Robert Burnett, previously a Staff-Sergeant with the RCMP who worked at the Operational Communications Centre in Truro.

The 49-year-old was arrested last August and charged with theft of cocaine, trafficking in cocaine, breach of trust, and laundering proceeds of crime.

Additional charges of obstruction of a police officer and fabrication of evidence were laid in February by the province's Serious Incident Response Team.

An investigation was launched in September 2015 after RCMP received information that 10 kilograms of cocaine was stolen from an exhibit locker in 2011 and replaced with another substance.

The drugs were no longer evidence in a court case and were scheduled to be destroyed.

It's alleged Burnett gave the cocaine to other persons, who sold it with the officer said to have received proceeds from the sale.
