Geese killed in Dartmouth to be memorialized

Two well-loved geese who were run down by a motorist will be memorialized Saturday night.

The geese were among nine known for using a crosswalk to get to their home on Sullivan's Pond in Dartmouth.

Police said three were hit during the Wednesday afternoon rush hour, with one surviving.

Katy Jean, a poet whose home overlooks the pond, says she isn't surprised that some are reacting skeptically to the idea of a memorial.

But she said the geese are iconic — prominent in local art and memorabilia.

The deaths at first prompted an outpouring of anger, after reports that the driver had hit the birds intentionally.

But police say that wasn't the case, and also determined speed was not a factor.
