Illegal cigarettes seized near Amherst
Two Halifax-area men, ages 51 and 52, are facing charges after a traffic stop led to the seizure of 85,000 illegal cigarettes near Amherst.
Service Nova Scotia says the estimated provincial tax value of the cigarettes is more than $23,000 and federal tax value is $18,000.
The traffic stop was conducted February 9th, and charges have been laid under the Nova Scotia Revenue Act, Excise Act, and the Criminal Code.
The men are due in Amherst Provincial Court on April 27th.
Cumberland District RCMP, officers of the Sûreté du Québec Contraband Tobacco Unit, and officers of the New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety and Contraband Enforcement Unit assisted with the one-month investigation.
