Impaired driving charge laid after vehicle hits Bible Hill train overpass

A 44-year-old Valley man has been charged with impaired driving after RCMP say he tried to avoid a checkpoint near the train overpass on Main Street in Bible Hill.

Police say a vehicle approached the checkpoint early Saturday morning at a high rate of speed, hit the concrete support of the overpass, and failed to stop for officers, who were on foot near their vehicles.

Two RCMP officers had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, and the suspect's vehicle continued down Pictou Road before leaving the road and finally coming to a stop.

The driver was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment, and has since been charged with impaired driving, driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, and dangerous driving.

He's due in Truro Provincial Court on May 17th.
