Liberals spent millions more on Bluenose II despite expert advice: PC MLA

A Progressive Conservative MLA says the Liberals have some explaining to do after spending more money on the Bluenose II project, despite expert advice that they shouldn't.

The Chronicle Herald reported that Lunenburg Shipyard Alliance submitted bills to the government for $5 million, which the province considered questionable.

The newspaper says the province agreed to pay the full amount, even though a U.S.-based consulting group hired by the justice department advised only $2 million of the charges were justified, and the government could take legal action to challenge the remaining work orders.

MLA Tim Houston says the Liberals owe it to taxpayers to explain their decision to pay out the disputed claims rather than fight for savings.

He's calling for the Standing Committee on Public Accounts to meet at the earliest possible date to examine the legitimacy of the charges.
