Location announced for new health-care centre and long-term care home in North Sydney
The Premier says North Sydney will soon be home to a new, modern community health centre, long-term care home and laundry centre.
A release says the new health-care facilities will be located on Memorial Drive in the Northside Business Park.
The new community health centre will offer many of the same services that are provided at the Northside General Hospital, including:
-- X-rays, ultrasounds, fluoroscopy and breast screening
-- blood collection
-- cardiac services
-- cancer screening
-- chronic pain and chronic disease management
-- counselling, community support teams and wellness clinics
-- expanded endoscopy and dialysis service
-- space for after-hours clinics, all existing family doctors to work as part of a collaborative team, continuing care staff to work on the same site and for physiotherapy, occupational therapy and nutrition to work in one location
The province says 12 new short-stay beds for patients who need observation outside of an acute care setting are included.
A new 60-bed long term care home that adds 38 new beds to the community will be attached to the health centre, and the site will also include a new, modern laundry facility.
The laundry facility will have the capability to process more laundry and will come equipped with automated controls and modern equipment while also improving working conditions.
Construction is slated to begin in fall 2020.
The release states the new facilities are part of the CBRM Health Care Redevlopment Project, which also includes:
-- expanding the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with a new emergency department, critical care department and cancer centre
-- renovating and revitalizing the Glace Bay Hospital emergency department
-- building a new, modern community health centre and long-term care home in New Waterford, creating a community hub with a new Breton Education Centre
-- a new community-base paramedic program in CBRM where paramedics and telecare nurses provide care after a patient is released from hospital
