Maritime Football Limited Partnership to make announcement in Halifax on Wednesday

The group behind a bid to bring a Canadian Football League team to Halifax is set to make an announcement Wednesday.

Maritime Football Limited Partnership is ramping up efforts to secure a CFL expansion team.

Partners of the group are expected to be joined by CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie to outline the next steps to earning a franchise in Halifax.

It's anticipated the announcement will include details about a season-ticket campaign and a name-the-team contest.

Maritime Football cleared a major hurdle last month when Halifax council agreed to study the proposal for a professional football team.

The biggest obstacle for the franchise is building a new stadium.

Football fans say the team would give the community a sense of civic pride and have a positive economic impact on the region.

But leading sports economists say there is little evidence that professional sports franchises and facilities have a measurable impact on the economy.
