MLA Lenore Zann looking for Truro Town Council's support for SANE program
Local MLA Lenore Zann is seeking Truro Town Council's support to bring the Sexual Assault Examiner Nurse (SANE) program to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre.
Zann, supported by representatives from the Colchester Sexual Assault Centre, The Lotus Centre and other advocates, will be making a presentation at Truro Town Council this afternoon.
Zann says she's hoping to secure the town's support for the SANE program to add weight to the call for provincial funding.
A SANE is a registered nurse who has completed specialized educational and clinical preparation to provide care, gather forensic evidence and give expert testimony after a sexual assault occurs.
The programs are currently in place in a number of Nova Scotia communities, but not Truro.
Truro's lack of a SANE program has come to the forefront in recent weeks after two separate reports of women being turned away from the local hospital after being sexually assaulted.
