More than two dozen board workers laid off in Cape Breton

The union representing some 1,100 employees at the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board says 28 education workers received layoff notices this week.

CUPE Local 5050 says 23 teaching assistants, two secretaries and three cleaners received layoff notices, while a bus driver and an inventory clerk position were lost through attrition.

President Mary Jessome says the decision comes as board members recently voted to increase their own wages by around $40,000.

Jessome says the move will seriously impact the quality of education students receive, and will cause a loss to the community in the rural Cape Breton areas that must be preserved.

CUPE says laying off teaching assistants before a committee created to study classroom inclusion reports back to government seems contradictory to the committee's mandate.
