New Parenting Support Act aims to modernize family laws and update court rules

The province has announced that legislative amendments, which were passed by the House of Assembly to improve support for children when their families break up, will come into effect on May 26th.

The province says the Maintenance Custody Act has been renamed the Parenting Support Act and that the amendments aim to modernize family laws and update court rules and forms.

The legislation was passed in December 2015,  and the province says the updates include changes to the language and terminology used around custody and parenting arrangements, such as replacing the terms "access" and "visiting privileges" with "parenting time," "contact time," and "interaction."
