Notorious Halifax gangster will be sentenced in January for his involvement in plot to kill rival

Notorious Halifax gangster Jimmy Melvin Junior will be sentenced in January for his involvement in a foiled plot to kill a rival crime figure in December 2008.

A Nova Scotia Supreme Court jury last week found Melvin guilty on charges of attempting to murder Terry Marriott Junior and conspiracy to commit murder.

Melvin fired lawyer Patrick McEwen midway through his trial and had to represent himself after Justice Peter Rosinski dismissed his motion for a mistrial.

Yarmouth lawyer Phil Star has agreed to represent Melvin for his sentencing.
