Nova Scotia teachers to hold one day strike on Friday

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU) says teachers will be holding a one day, province-wide strike on Friday.

In a news release, the union says they had no choice due to the "complete lack of respect displayed by Stephen McNeil and his government towards teachers, students and their families."

NSTU President Liette Doucette says Bill 75, introduced yesterday as the Teachers Professional Agreement and Classroom Improvement Act, "limits teachers’ right to strike, erodes their ability to negotiate a fair contract and prevents them from advocating for reforms to improve learning conditions for their students."

She says the NSTU, in its 122 year history, has never faced a more anti-education Premier than Stephen McNeil.

Doucette says the result is the first province-wide teacher strike ever in Nova Scotia.
