Nova Scotia to hire two special prosecutors to handle sexual assault cases
Justice Minister Diana Whalen says the province is hiring two special prosecutors in the Public Prosecution Service to handle sexual assault cases.
It was one of several initatives announced Tuesday, which the province says will improve its support of women, children, and other victims of sexual assault in the criminal justice system.
Whalen says government is also aiming to partner with the federal government to provide free, independent legal advice for victims of sexual assault so they can better understand their options and navigate through the court system.
Auditing to ensure police have the appropriate capability to investigate sexual assaults, and opening a new Domestic Violence Court in the Halifax Regional Municipality were two more initatives announced.
