Premier Stephen McNeil has announced that the provincial government will provide about $1.75 million in annual operating costs for a new 10-bed hospice in Cape Breton.

Membertou is providing the site for the 14,000 square foot residence through a low-cost, long-term lease.

The province says the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County fundraising campaign for the construction is $2 million away from its $5.2 million goal.

Society co-chair Patricia Jackson says the goal is to open the doors to the facility and welcome patients and families by the end of 2021.

Once built, it will be the third hospice in Nova Scotia as one in Halifax opened in April and the Kentville site is under construction.
