Rally in Halifax to protest building demolition

A rally is planned for later Saturday against the demolition of an historic Victorian-era building in downtown Halifax.

The heritage preservation group says the Elmwood Hotel, a yellow apartment building on the corner of South and Barrington Streets, is one of Halifax's signature historic buildings.

They say the original building dates back to 1826 and the present structure is over 100 years old.

A local developer has obtained permits to tear down the building, with plans to build a six-storey mixed-use development.
