RCMP investigating a rash of structure fires in Collingwood

The Cumberland District RCMP in Oxford is investigating a string of structure fires in the Collingwood area last month.

Police say a total of five fires were reported at abandoned homes, with four of the buildings being destroyed.

The first, on February 5th, was on Wentworth Collingwood Road, with the remaining four fires on Wyvern Road; two on both the 20th and 27th.

In the fifth incident, the home was damaged by fire, not destroyed.

Staff-Sergeant Craig Learning, Detachment Commander of Cumberland District RCMP, says the fires are putting a significant draw on community resources and raising concerns for the safety of officers and other first responders who are called to these scenes.

The Nova Scotia Office of the Fire Marshal is aiding RCMP with their investigation to determine who is responsible for the fires.

Close to 130 people attended a meeting at the Collingwood and District Fire Hall last week to discuss the fires with police, the fire department, and a representative from the county.
