RCMP seek information regarding crash that killed Cst. Deschênes

Police in New Brunswick are asking to speak with anyone who saw a cargo van on Highway 2 the day of a crash that killed Nova Scotia RCMP Constable Francis Deschênes.

Specifically, police are seeking those who saw a dark blue Dodge TK 2008 cargo van with the Pennsylvania license plate ZBN 8883 travelling eastbound between Moncton and Memramcook between 5:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

RCMP say they've spoken with several witnesses thus far, and are continuing to gather information.

The man who was driving the vehicle was taken into custody on Tuesday, and has since been released on conditions.

At this point, no charges have been laid.

Cst. Deschênes was killed just after 6 p.m. while on duty with Northwest Traffic Services-Amherst, having stopped to help two people in an SUV change a tire.

A utility van hit his cruiser and the SUV, and police say he died at the scene.

Two people in the SUV were taken to hospital.
