RECC GM honoured at CSTA PRESTIGE Awards

The General Manager of the Rath Eastlink Community Centre (RECC) has been honoured Thursday as a Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s (CSTA) Sport Tourism Rising Star.

Matt Moore is one of five recipients of the award for work and contributions to the sport tourism industry, with the presentation made at the 12th Annual PRESTIGE Awards.

The 2017 World Junior A Challenge (WJAC), held at the RECC in December, was also up for Canadian Sport Event of the Year for an event with less than a $1 million budget, but the award went to BMO NBA Courts Across Canada.

It caps a great week for the RECC, which just celebrated its fifth anniversary, following news that the facility anticipates its first annual operating surplus.

The Truro Daily News reports a joint council meeting between the Town of Truro and the Municipality of Colchester last week heard the surplus could be $200,000.

Truro CAO Mike Dolter noted during council's monthly meeting on Monday that it's been an excellent year for the RECC, with membership soaring to over 3,000.

He says the dehumidification unit, installed in September, is almost completely operational but has a few issues left to work out.

Dolter says the process has been "a little more drawn out than we would have liked", but adds an event like the WJAC would have run into issues without it.
