Sexual assault charges laid against military member in Halifax

A member of the Canadian Armed Forces has been charged with two counts of sexual assault.

The charges are related to alleged incidents while Leading Seaman Trevor Michael Brenton was aboard HMCS Kingston February and March of 2018.

The Department of National Defence says in a press release that a third party reported that an incident of sexual nature had occurred onboard the ship while deployed along the coast of West Africa.

Brenton is also charged under the National Defence Act with two counts of abuse of a subordinate, and one count each of disobedience of lawful command and behaving in a disgraceful manner.

The matter is now proceeding in accordance with the military justice system for possible court martial.
