Shelburne County man charged with aggravated assault
Barrington RCMP say they are investigating an aggravated assault in Shelburne County.
Police say the investigation was started on Wednesday after a victim told them he was driving past a home on Blanche Road when the suspect ran out of the home, confronted him and head butted and spat on the victim while he was still in his vehicle.
Officers went to the residence around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday to arrest the suspect and police say the 59-year-old man met police outside the residence carrying a walking staff.
RCMP say the man dropped the walking staff when told to do so, but when he was told he was under arrest he began to resist, retrieving the walking staff in the struggle and striking one officer in the wrist and a second in the head.
Police say the arresting officers then used a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) and OC spray (pepper spray) to gain control of the suspect in an attempt to restrain him from causing further harm to himself and others.
RCMP say they suspect was eventually brought under control and he and the two injured officers were taken to hospital for examination where it was found the officers suffered moderate injuries while the suspect was uninjured.
Police say the suspect was remanded into custody overnight and had a court appearance scheduled in Shelburne yesterday.
Grigorios Laberakis, 59, of Blanche Rd., has been charged with:
- Aggravated Assault
- Assault with a Weapon (4 counts)
- Resisting Arrest
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
RCMP say their investigation is on-going.
