Alton Natural Gas Storage L.P. recently donated a new rescue boat, outboard motor, and trailer to the Stewiacke and District Volunteer Fire Department.

The coverage area for the fire department covers large sections of the Stewiacke and Shubenacadie rivers, as well as local lakes.

Alton says until now, if a person was in trouble on the water, the department would need to call a neighboring fire department with a boat to help out and lose valuable time during a rescue.

Fire Chief Brent Murdock says the boat will help them, as volunteer firefighters, to be better able to respond to calls to help the public.

A rescue involving the boat will involve three trained volunteer firefighters, one to run the engine and two to help with the rescue, along with support by firefighters on shore as needed.
