Teen charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing RCMP officer

A teenager is facing a number of charges, including attempted murder, after allegedly attacking an RCMP officer with a screwdriver.

Antigonish District RCMP were called to a home on Mugasun Rd in Paq'tnkek Sunday morning, but the subject of the complaint, a 15-year-old boy, had left before officers arrived.

Two officers canvassed the area, while a third officer went to the home to speak with the complainant.

The teen returned, but when the officer tried to stop him from going further into the home, the Mounties say he grabbed a screwdriver and tried to stab the officer.

Both the officer and teen fell to the ground, at which time police say the teen stabbed at the officer several times and reached for his gun.

The boy eventually dropped the screwdriver and was taken into custody.

The RCMP say the police officer's body armour and winter clothing protected him and he sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The teen has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, attempting to disarm a police officer, possession of a weapon, and resisting arrest.

The youth is being held in custody until Tuesday's court appearance.
