Tories introduce legislation to help cover increased policing costs due to marijuana legalization
The interim leader of the Progressive Conservatives has introduced a bill to provide funding to municipalities to cover any increased policing costs relating to the legalization of marijuana.
Karla MacFarlane, also the MLA for Pictou West , says, "With the tight timeline and no clarity on how the provincial Liberals intend to legislate and regulate the sale of cannabis, municipalities are worried they will be left with the increased costs of policing cannabis."
She cites a letter to federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau dated December 7th from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, who estimate additional policing costs would be about $2.25 million to $3.25 million per 500,000 people.
MacFarlane says strong enforcement of the new rules around cannabis means providing those on the frontlines with the proper training and support to detect impaired driving and protect public safety.
