Trial resumes for man charged with killing Kristin Johnston

The trial resumes Monday for a 36-year-old man charged with killing yoga instructor Kristin Johnston in her Halifax-area home and then trying to kill himself.

Nicholas Butcher was charged with second-degree murder after police discovered the body of the Montreal-born yoga instructor in the master bedroom of her Purcells Cove home on a blood-soaked bed, next to a steak knife in March 2016.

Police said they went to the scene after Butcher, breathing heavily and sobbing, called 911 and told them he had killed his girlfriend and had cut off his hand.

The 14-member Nova Scotia Supreme Court jury has heard that the 32-year-old businesswoman had just shut down her yoga studio, wanted to leave Halifax behind and was ending her relationship with Butcher.

Friends say they were with Johnston the night before her death and that Butcher showed up unexpectedly at one of their houses to see her.

The Crown will continue calling evidence Monday as the trial enters its third week.
