Trucker rally planned for Thursday in support of Northern Pulp mill

As many as 100 truckers are expected to take part in a rally near Truro today in support of giving Northern Pulp more time to replace its existing effluent treatment facility.

Spokesperson Jeff Black, of J.C. Black Trucking Ltd., told the Truro News the truckers, many of whom are heavily involved in the forest industry, want the government to relax its deadline to give the Pictou County mill time to develop a workable and environmentally safe solution.

The mill's current owners, Paper Excellence, have said if the government doesn't give them enough time to complete a new facility, they'll have no choice but to permanently cease operations in Nova Scotia.

However, the Nova Scotia government has said there are no plans to extend the January 2020 deadline to close the Boat Harbour treatment facility.

Thursday's rally will see truckers park their rigs on both sides of Highway 104 near Truro and is expected to run from about noon to 3 p.m.
