Truro Blessing of the Bikes 2019 in Victoria Park Saturday
The annual Blessing of the Bikes goes in Truro's Victoria park today.
In a conversation with our newsroom this morning, event spokesperson David Dewolfe says the event was founded by Lloyd "Animal" Rector and has been running annually since 1989.
The event is the traditional opener of bike season in Nova Scotia, and Dewolfe says anywhere from 100-500 bikers will attend today, with local dignitaries including Mayor Bill Mills and MLA Lenore Zann also expected.
A blessing from ministers of several faiths is given, with riders on bikes receiving a safe rider prayer card along with a note stating "I was Blessed in 2019" adorned with today's date.
In a post to the event's Facebook page last night, DeWolfe eloquently describes the purpose of today's festical, "to renew old friendships after a long winter. To bow our heads and speak the name in remembrance of a chum who rides no more. To respect each other. To share some smiles and love."
Members of the public are invited to see the bikes on display in the park.
Today's event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the forecast calling for periods of drizzle to taper off in the early afternoon.
