Nova Scotia's Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has released more details about the death of a man who had been taken into custody by Amherst Police over the weekend.

SiRT says a 71-year-old man was arrested for public intoxication early Saturday morning and transported to the Amherst Police Department where he was lodged in a holding cell.

EHS was contacted "after noticing the man's condition was deteriorating" and he was transported to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.

The man died on Sunday.

SiRT says an autopsy will be performed by the Medical Examiner's office today.
