One man is dead and an RCMP officer is injured following an incident on Willow Street in Truro early Saturday morning.

Colchester District RCMP were investigating a complaint of a stolen vehicle from Cumberland County around 2:30 a.m. that had been spotted in Truro.

Police say an officer sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries when they were struck by the suspect vehicle.

The RCMP say the officer "fired their service pistol at the driver of the vehicle, resulting in the death of the man".

Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots, and it's unclear if the suspect fired at the officer.

The driver was the lone person in the vehicle, and no other police officers or civilians were injured.

The RCMP provided the update on the incident during a news conference Saturday afternoon in Dartmouth.

Willow Street was closed between Arthur Street and McClures Mills Road until just after 3 p.m.

The matter has now been referred to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), and the RCMP are thanking the Truro Police Service for their help during the investigation.
