**Updated** Redevelopment of North Cumberland Memorial Hospital moves ahead

The provincial government says construction of a new hospital in Pugwash should begin late next year.

Premier Stephen McNeil announced the replacement of North Cumberland Memorial Hospital Tuesday.

The new health-care facility will include primary health care, urgent and collaborative emergency care, laboratory and diagnostic imaging, inpatient care, and rehabilitation services for Pugwash and the surrounding communities.

The current hospital opened in 1966, and includes a collaborative emergency centre in addition to providing primary health-care and diagnostic services.

It's one of many health care facilities in Cumberland County to be plagued by emergency department closures due to a lack of physician coverage.
