A Truro-based doctor is now the president of Doctors Nova Scotia.

Dr. Tim Holland lives in Fall River, but works at the Truro hospital, the Sipekne'katik Health Centre in Indian Brook and the Newcomer Health Clinic in Halifax, which he co-founded.

He was installed as president Saturday, during the association's annual conference in Sydney.

Also on Saturday, Liverpool-based Dr. Gary Ernest was approved as President-Elect for 2018-19 and will become president next June.

Meanwhile, a Truro-area doctor has received the Physician Health Promotion Award for developing a community-based walking program.

Dr. Stephen Ellis helped launch the first Atlantic Canadian chapter of Walk with a Doc in 2016 at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.

Running Saturday mornings, the grassroots walking program connects family doctors with their patients and members of the public for a walk each week.

Ellis has been a family doctor in Truro for 19 years, and previously worked as a flight surgeon with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
