Plan two ways out: Fire Prevention Week tips to stay safe

Nova Scotia's fire marshal says it's important to plan two exits from every room in your home in case of a fire.

That's the theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week, which starts Oct. 8 and runs until Oct. 14.

Fred Jeffers says it can take as little as two minutes for a fire in your home to become life-threatening, so every second matters in getting out safely.

Seven people died and 24 people were hurt as a result of fires in 2016-17.

Officials say it's also important to teach young children not to hide in the event of a fire.
