Steve Duffy's Sports Comment For Monday, January 2nd, 2017

The Christmas - New Year's period is an interesting time for sports, especially hockey. The World Juniors got under way on Boxing Day. Today, it's Canada versus the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals, at five. We'll have it on CFAX, with the pre-game at four. That also means we have to pre-empt tonight's Canucks game, as they host Colorado.

In fact, we'll start our World Junior coverage at 12:30, with the Sweden - Slovakia quarter-final.

And as far as the Canucks are concerned, go figure!! They are coming off that big win over Edmonton on Saturday night, a game that's being described as one heck of an exciting game. The Canucks are on a roll, and have won three in a row.

Yesterday, we had the Toronto-based, and much-hyped Centennial Classic, between the Leafs and Detroit at BMO Field. Once again, Toronto takes, or tried to take, centre-stage on the Canadian sports scene. The Leafs blew a three-goal lead, but won the thing 5-4 in overtime.

And how about our junior teams. It looks like the Royals have found the winning touch they've been looking for all season. They've won four straight, and visit Prince George for two this weekend. The Royals host Kelowna next Wednesday and Friday, with Moose Jaw here on Saturday, the 14th.

And the BCHL's Grizzlies opened a five-game road trip last Friday with a 3-1 win over the Caps in Duncan. The Grizzlies are flying, and lead the Island Division with 55 points, ten more than second-place Powell River, with two games in hand. The Grizzlies visit Nanaimo Wednesday, with their next home game against those Clippers next Thursday, the 12th.

So we have to wait till next Wednesday to see the Royals here, and the night after for the Grizzleis to play at home.

But heck, they're both flyin'!!!

That's my Sports Comment. I'm Steve Duffy.
