Steve Duffy's Sports Comment For Thursday, January 26th, 2017

In these parts, lacrosse is king, especially from May to September. That's when the Shamrocks play, and draw big crowds to their home rink, Colwood's Q Centre. It may still be January, but the Shamrocks have already made some announcements regarding the coming season. Last week, they announced they'd acquired Casey Jackson from Nanaimo for second round draft pick. Jackson's a known scorer, and will fill the void left by Jesse King.

'Kinger,' as he's known, won't be able to play this season after severely injuring his knee in last year's playoffs. That was a huge blow, but getting Jackson was a pretty big deal.

I often get to chat with Shamrocks GM Chris Welch, and he tells me they're busy almost all year long, recruiting and convincing players to come back. Convincing, as many play in the pro National Lacrosse League during the winter, and for some, playing almost all year round can be a grind, especially in a tough sport like box lacrosse.

Also of note today, the Shamrocks announced the annual Spring Break lacrosse camp hosted by Rhys Duch is set for March 20th to 22nd, and they're now taking registrations. Duch, and Shamrocks players Corey Small, goalie Cody Hagedorn and maybe more will be involved in this camp. It'll be held at Eagle Ridge arena and will be broken up into two groups, ages 7 to 10 and ages 11 to 14.

And new this year, if a child's a Shamrocks' season ticket holder, they'll get 10 per cent off their registration fees. There are limited spots available. Register over the phone at 250-478-7625 or to go

You can also go to that website for info on the Shamrocks' coming season.

I know I'm already looking forward to it!
