Jeep abandoned in senstive Nanaimo lagoon
A hard lesson for the owner of a Jeep in Nanaimo -- just because it's a 4 X 4 doesn't mean you can drive it anywhere.
The man drove around barricades after hours in order to take his vehicle into the water at Pipers Lagoon Park -- and got stuck, forcing him to abandon it there.
The lagoon and surrounding area is home to a variety of wildlife and arbutus groves.
Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O'Brien says the driver will likely face charges under local parks bylaws, and possibly under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is concerned the abandoned Jeep could pose a pollution risk, and has taken over the case.
