Nanaimo teen succumbs to injuries after being struck in a crosswalk last Wednesday

A 17 year old high school student struck in a crosswalk March 6th has succumbed to his injuries in a Victoria hospital.

The BC Coroners service confirms it is investigating the death.

The tragic news was confirmed to parents after the principal at Dover Bay Secondary School sent a letter home. Grief counsellors are being made available to students and staff.

According to witnesses the teen was crossing at an intersection at around 3:15 last Wednesday when he was struck by an SUV.  

The driver, 33, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with RCMP.

The cause remains unclear, but the vehicle -- a newer-model Toyota RAV4 -- was seized and is undergoing a mechanical inspection.
