New Baby Orca seen Swimming in American Waters

A baby whale has been spotted amongst the endangered southern resident killer whales. Researches spotted the newborn calf on Thursday night in Peugot Sound, swimming with the L-Pod.

The mother is L-77, a 31 year old orca. The sex of the calf, dubbed L124, has not been determined yet. L-77's first calf was born in 2010, and died the same year.  Her second baby, the female L119, was born in 2012.

The Centre for Whale Research says only approximately 60 percent of newborn calves survive their first few years, but they are hopeful L124 makes it maturity, especially if it's a female. The Southern Resident Orca population is now 75.
